I-35W Stormwater Storage Facility

TKDA addresses historical flooding with underground storage system

As part of the recently completed I-35W Downtown to Crosstown Project, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) addressed historical flooding along the corridor with a first-of-its-kind method in Minnesota. The project includes the design and construction of a 14-acre-foot (4.6 million gallon) underground storage system, consisting of six interlocking chambers with an internal diameter of 42 feet and depth ranging from 82 to 84 feet, using a top-down construction approach with diaphragm walls. The chambers are emptied with a lift station after rainfall events that trigger the use of the storage and downstream capacity is available. TKDA, with our teaming partners Barr Engineering Co. and Brierley Associates, delivered the final design in conjunction with the CMGC team of Kraemer/Nicholson Construction Company JV.
